PREP Circle - Tan Kheng Hua

April 10, 2017 by Joanne Tan No Comments

Hers is a name that needs little introduction in Singapore’s entertainment scene. Beyond her run as Phua Chu Kang’s long-suffering sister-in-law that made her a household name on local television, Tan Kheng Hua is also a celebrated actress on the theatre scene and an established producer with critically-acclaimed productions under her belt.

We at PREP Luxe have the great honour of calling her both friend and client, and in the time we’ve gotten to know her, we’ve discovered the only thing that surpasses the largeness of her theatrical resume, is her heart. And her spunk. Which, we’ve had the privilege of finding out, she has lots and lots of. Her latest project as the producer of Tropicana, a comedy-musical inspired by the lavish, Las Vegas-style nightclub Tropicana in the 60s, was a huge leap of faith professionally and personally. And remember we said large heart? She took time out for us in the middle of what could be the craziest week leading to opening day, to talk about her incredible journey leading this production and her partnership with PREP Luxe in this musical.

PREP: Tropicana was such a colourful and vibrant slice of Singapore’s entertainment scene in the sixties. Do share with us what inspired you to create a story out of it and bring it to life on stage.

KH: People think Tropicana The Musical is a musical about tits, because it is inspired by Singapore and South East Asia’s first and most successful topless nightclub. But this musical is less about tits than it is about balls. The balls of a handful of passionate, fearless, imaginative dreamers who went all the way in fighting for their visions no matter how incredible it may have seemed at that time.

In the 1960s, we were truly a global city of the arts - and it was led not by government agenda, or grants, but by fiercely independent vision. We had a thriving movie making scene. Our local bands outsold even the Beatles. We had local department stores of unique local flavour. A local ladies magazine then that has survived and exists today as Singapore’s number one women’s interest magazine and online liftstyle network. A theatre-maker willing to spend time incarcerated to stand up for his beliefs whose daughter carries on his work today. A nightclub unparalleled in the region on which this musical is drawing inspiration from. And of course, a nation-builder out to change the entire paradigm of how people lived on this tiny island.

PREP: You’re a veteran of the theatre and television scene in Singapore and were the creative and executive brains behind notable productions such as Do Not Disturb and The Twenty-Something Festival. Although Tropicana will not be your first theatrical undertaking as a producer, it will be one of the biggest projects you’ve ever led. I’m sure you’ve learnt new things and grown both professionally and personally in this journey thus far. What has been your biggest (or favourite) lesson to date in producing this musical?

KH: The biggest lesson, now, always and forever is that, love conquers all. With every moment of doubt or disappointment, it has always been made better because someone loved the bad moment into something good. And when you surround yourself with people who are as good in heart and mind as I have in this production, the love is always expressed in ways that benefit everyone and makes everyone a better person.

PREP: You could have remained quite content in the comfort your amazing career in entertainment has brought you, yet you have chosen to take this big leap and invest professionally, financially and personally into this project. We are inspired by your boldness and vision in bringing together some of Singapore’s best theatre talents to create this musical. And because courage is infectious, we want to hear from you what emboldened you to do this, to take a chance on something you had never done before.

KH: I am 54. I have paid off my mortgage and been in two careers in my lifetime, both of which I have nursed to a place where I feel I can be proud of. I have been married for nearly 25 years and had enough ups and downs to feel a little wiser. I have a daughter who is 19 and is on her way to going overseas to university and starting a life of her own.

Some people at this stage of their lives take out all their savings and open the café they have always wanted to open, or take the round-the-world-trip they have always wanted to take, or get divorced and start a new life, or retire and do nothing. Well, at this point in my life, I wanted to devote myself, my love for theatre and my savings into a project I can truly call my own. It is something I have always wanted to do. And at this point in my life, I can do it. So here I am! Doing it!

PREP: That’s amazing and we are inspired by the chances you’re willing to take on a passion project like this. Also, not only did you take a chance on yourself and your team to put this musical together, but you’ve also extended an opportunity to the PREP Luxe team to be a part of this exciting production. It is not often that a hair salon gets called beyond the everyday realm of cuts and blowouts, to help bring to life a story on stage. Why did you decide to take a chance on us instead of falling back to tried-and-true professional stage stylists?

KH: In the time I have gotten to know Prep Luxe, I have grown to not just love them, but admire how they get about their business, treat people, create. They are everything I love about collaborators. The most hard working, brave, adventurous, thought-out, humble and good-hearted and kind. They are also so damn good at what they do. I have taken them on this roller-coaster ride and I am so thankful every day for their trust, talent and energy.

We have so much appreciation for Kheng Hua for her kind words about our team, her steadfast support of the work we do, and the confidence she’s placed in us to glamourise the tresses of her talented cast in this upcoming musical. We wish her and her team nothing but love and luck as they put in final preparations for opening night this Thursday. Tropicana The Musical will run from 13 - 30 April at the Capitol Theatre. So fans of PREP and fans of the theatre, if you have not gotten your tickets, it’s not too late and you can still purchase them on the SISTIC website here.

PREP Picks: Angie Chen

April 8, 2015 by Joanne Tan No Comments

Passionate and colorful. Dynamic and vibrant. That’s how Angie Chen lives life, with the occasional pause to reflect and nestle in some down-time with her family over good food. Her ideal weekend is always the perfect balance of both creature comforts and venturing out to explore the new.

It is not surprising then that she names New York and London as her favourite travel destinations, where she relishes in taking in the vibrancy and dynamism the arts, music, food and fashion scene in those cities have to offer. Her love of the vivid and the unique runs through her exuberant approach to life and her wardrobe. As the curator for THE FIFITH COLLECTION, Angie lends her vibrant yet impeccably chic and refined taste, and detailed eye to the selection of the choicest vintage pieces for the online store.

We have the pleasure of having Angie share with us some of her current loves and obsessions. Enjoy!

PREP Picks - Angie

1. Vintage Christian Lacroix: “I have always been a big fan of Lacroix for his intricate and opulent designs, but this year I am determined to stop buying fast fashion and collect everything Lacroix due to the historical value of each piece.”

2. Le Cinéma Olfactif by Folie A Plusiers Perfumes: “A good friend of mine in Berlin started this perfume project with perfumer Mark Buxton (of Comme des Garcons fame) to create fragrances inspired by films. My personal favourites from this series are Mood Indigo and Virigin Suicides. They smell exactly like what the movie should be.”

3. Glamglow Supermud: “This is my daily solution to the clogged pores in my otherwise clear skin. Such a lifesaver for those problem areas and my skin always feels so smooth after each use.”

4. Benoit Missolin Headgear: “The perfect balance of quirkiness and elegance, a Benoit piece always adds that extra style oomph to my outfits.”

5. Tangle Teezer Comb: “This is my answer to reviving flat and lifeless-looking hair. I reach for it at the end of a long work day to give my hair that gorgeous, voluminous boost.”

PREP Picks: Jacelyn Soh

January 14, 2015 by Joanne Tan No Comments

At PREP, we’ve the privilege of working with some of the most amazing, stylish, passionate and inspiring people around and we want to give you a glimpse of some of the things these style-makers and scene-stealers are currently loving and obsessing over. To kick off the “PREP Picks” series, it’s our own Jacelyn Soh, one-third of PREP and all-round sweetheart and animal lover.

The number-cruncher in the trio of PREP lady bosses, Jacelyn is always the picture of cool, collected chic with her classic and modern style. A self-confessed homebody she loves nothing more than a night in with a home-cooked meal surrounded by two of the greatest loves of her life - husband Andrew and furbaby Max. While this might sound seemingly contradictory, she also loves the exposure to the new and unique tastes and sights that travel brings, and names Italy with its fabulous dining scene and luscious scenery, as one of her all-time favourite travel destinations.

Here are her current loves and obsessions:

1. Clé de Peau Beauté Concealor: “My everyday cheat-stick to natural, flawless skin. I never leave home without this!”

2. Chanel Espadrilles: “These are my dressed-for-comfort shoes. They’re casual but stylish enough that I don’t feel or look sloppy in them.”

3. Le Creuset Dutch Oven in Caribbean: “I’ve been learning to cook recently and this is perfect for making broths and stews in. Great for any rookie, wannabe home-cooks because it cooks everything so evenly and beautifully.”

4. Cranberry Almond Granola from The Edible Company: “I have to have this for breakfast every morning - handmade granola, made with the best natural ingredients. So delish with organic yoghurt!”

5. Redken Wind Blown Finishing Spray ($32 at PREP): “I love using this for my hair after a blowout. It gives my hair such great texture, with a lovely, soft matte finish.”

PREP Star: Christina Tan

March 31, 2014 by PREP No Comments

PREP loves sharing good stories about inspiring people. All of the models on our hair menu are people with a real zest for life and we’re happy to introduce you to them as part of a series of PREP Stars.

CHRISTINA TAN

What do you work as?
I’ve just joined LaPrendo, a luxury retailer and tastemaker with a curated offering of fashion and desirable objects from established European labels as well as up-and-coming designers. As a Fashion Management Trainee, I’m currently getting to know our store and our clientele better at the Dempsey Road boutique, before continuing on my rotation at our Fullerton Hotel boutique and the office. I also contribute to a few other functions, such as website content development and inventory management.

What are some of the best parts of your work that you look forward to?
I enjoy working with this dynamic team of über-talented and motivated individuals. I also derive great satisfaction when I successfully coax our style-savvy customers to try something new or different, that is just a little outside their comfort zone. We are confident about the products we carry, and it’s great when we can convince our clients that they are a joy to own and wear.

What are some interests you have outside of work?
I have several, but the common thread through most of my interests is that they involve creating or creativity. I did a couple of amazing summer stints at Saint Pierre the restaurant, and Sebastien’s Bistro many years ago, baking bread, and assisting with pastry and desserts, and the baking bug has not left me since. I enjoy travelling, going to exhibitions, cocktails/dining, learning about a craft.. a year ago I went to Yogyakarta in Indonesia to study batik-making under the artists Agus Ismoyo and Nia Fliam; it was a short but humbling and enriching experience. I also like bring people together at dinner parties and would love to host more in future.

What makes you excited about these interests?
In one word, inspiration. I want to be aware of the world around me, and to continue training my eye for beauty. I believe every unique experience allows you to apply a new perspective to problem solving, in a very general sense, and makes you a more interesting person! So I try to keep an open mind and have a sense of curiosity.

You’d most likely be found getting a blowout at PREP when you need to PREP for…
A special date night, dinner party, birthday celebration, wedding, or hen night!
